Can You Sell Without GST Registration?

If your business’s annual turnover is below ₹40 lakh (₹20 lakh for special category states), you can sell on most eCommerce platforms **without GST registration**. Here's a list of popular eCommerce platforms that allow you to do so:

  • Amazon India: You can sell without a GST registration if your turnover is below ₹40 lakh. Amazon may request a GSTIN for specific goods but won't require GST returns unless you cross the threshold.
  • Flipkart: Flipkart allows selling without GST registration for businesses with turnover below ₹40 lakh. They may ask for a GSTIN depending on the type of products you're selling.
  • Shopify: On Shopify, you can build your own store and sell without GST registration if your turnover is below ₹40 lakh. However, if your business grows, you’ll need to register for GST once you cross the limit.
  • Snapdeal: Like Amazon and Flipkart, Snapdeal permits businesses with turnover below ₹40 lakh to sell without GST registration. GSTIN may be requested for verification in certain cases.
  • Meesho: Meesho allows selling without GST registration if your turnover is below ₹40 lakh. When your turnover exceeds the threshold, GST registration is required.
  • Etsy (for international sales): If you're selling internationally on Etsy, you can sell without GST registration if your turnover is below ₹40 lakh. However, Etsy may charge taxes depending on the buyer's location.

Important Points to Consider

  • Turnover below ₹40 lakh: If your turnover is below ₹40 lakh (₹20 lakh for special category states), you can sell without registering for GST on platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, and Meesho.
  • GSTIN Requirement: Some platforms may request your GSTIN for verification purposes even if you don’t need to charge GST on your sales.
  • Voluntary GST Registration: You may opt for voluntary GST registration if you wish to claim input tax credits (ITC) or sell to other GST-registered businesses.
  • Filing GST Returns: If your turnover is below ₹40 lakh and you're not registered for GST, you are not required to file GST returns or pay GST.
